Cilento in July is a beach with a national park attached. Cilento from October to April is the reverse — a national park with a coastline attached — and it's a genuinely different place. Here's what's worth the drive once the pool has closed for the year.
The Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park is unbearable to walk in August and close to perfect from November through March. Gorges, hill trails and the paths around Monte Stella are all doable in a morning, and none of them require technical gear — just proper shoes and a reason not to rush.
Covered on its own elsewhere in this journal, but it belongs on every off-season list: the temples in low winter light, no queue, no tour groups moving through in blocks.
Half an hour from Biancolivo, and the dairies work all year, but winter production is often considered richer — the buffalo are eating differently, and several local producers will say the winter batches are their favourite, even if summer is when most people buy it.
Castellabate, Agropoli's old town, and the smaller inland villages toward Roscigno are built for slow walking, not beach traffic. In summer they're a drive-through. In October they're what Cilento actually looks like when it's not performing for tourists.

Villages across Cilento run sagre — local food festivals — through autumn and into early winter, built around whatever that village is known for: chestnuts, mushrooms, olive oil, wine. They're not staged for visitors. Ask us what's on that week; the calendar changes village to village and year to year.
Its own entry too — the court plays best exactly when the beach crowd has gone home.
This is the one nobody puts on a list, and it's the real reason to come back off-season.
Breakfast without a queue. A pool deck — closed for swimming by November, but still the nicest place to have coffee — with nobody on it. Four rooms means Biancolivo was never built for peak-season crowds in the first place; out of season, that's the whole point, finally uninterrupted.
